Chat is the app. A personal AI that lives on your machine, keeps your data yours, and takes real action — the web, your files, email, code. SAM itself has no subscription and no credits to burn through. £0 a month — paid AI models are optional, and only used if you add your own key and choose them. Source-available (not MIT): run an official build; redistributing source needs permission.
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/richhabits/sam/main/docs/install.sh | bashshasum -a 256 / Get-FileHash. The one-paste installer verifies this automatically.
Checksums could not be fetched (GitHub 404). See the GitHub release notes.
Most assistants live on someone else's server, charge you monthly, and read everything you type. SAM flips all three.
Big job? SAM assembles a crew of specialists — research, code, writing, strategy — that work in parallel and hand you one answer. Plus the Ninjas: a squad that hunts down problems and deals with them.
Looks through your camera, learns the people you introduce it to, and Guardian mode warns you about anyone it doesn't recognise. Motion detection runs locally on your machine; pictures are read by the AI model you choose (a free cloud model, or fully local with Ollama).
Your keys, memory, files and vault stay on your laptop — no account, no tracking unless you opt in, and SAM never uses your data to train anything. The only thing that leaves is the prompt you choose to send to the brain you pick — and in offline (Ollama) mode, nothing leaves at all.
The iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch app is on the App Store as 2.0.1. It needs iOS 26. Chat works on the phone where Apple Intelligence is available. Pairing with your computer is optional. There is no SAM account. Watch, Safari, Share and Siri are in that native app. The older React Native Pocket is not the store app.
Searches the web, reads your files, drafts email, pushes code, opens PRs, plays music — with an ask-first safety gate.
Runs on free models (NVIDIA, Groq, Cerebras, Mistral…) that auto-rotate, so you rarely hit a limit — and nothing is billed unless you add a paid key and choose it. Many cloud agents on the market price by the minute or the credit — which is exactly why their #1 complaint is always the same complaint: the bill. SAM has no meter of its own.
A morning brief and proactive nudges. SAM messages you — the weather, what's due, what needs a follow-up.
SAM builds real projects in a sandboxed folder, checkpointed with real git — and one tap puts one on the actual internet. Every publish is smoke-tested before SAM calls it done; nothing goes public without you confirming it, and one tap takes it back down.
Your Mac does the actual work — the build, the deploy, the checking. Your phone is just how you tell it what to do, and where the finished link lands.
A live preview updates as SAM builds. Say what to change and it rebuilds — shows you, doesn't just tell you.
Publish asks first, names exactly what it's about to do, and hands back a URL SAM has actually checked is live — with a QR code to open it on your phone.
Ask in plain English. SAM picks the right tool, does the work, and asks before anything risky. This list is generated live from the code — every tool below is really in there.
The Mac app is the desktop download (3.7.0). The phone app is on the App Store as 2.0.1 for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch — Get it on the App Store. It needs iOS 26. The store also lists it on Mac as an iPad app, and that Mac version is not verified yet.
SAM: Smart Artificial Mind, version 2.0.1. Chat on the phone. Pair with your computer when you want your files and tools. iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Needs iOS 26. No account.
Join the TestFlight beta for newer native builds. The store app already includes Watch, Safari, Share, Siri and widgets. The older React Native Pocket is not what the store ships.
Safari on Mac can already add the in-browser SAM to your Dock (File → Add to Dock), and Safari on iPhone and iPad to your Home Screen.
Use a Download button, or paste the one-liner. Homebrew on Apple Silicon is 3.7.0; Intel Homebrew is the last Intel DMG (3.5.0).
Chat is the app. It starts on a free lane — no key, no account. Your name is optional. Skip and type.
A free Groq key in Settings is optional extra speed. Never required. Paid models only if you add your own key and choose them.
